I was doing the laundry in the Wee Launderette across the street in my small Ontario town. There was just one other person in there and we got to talking while the clothes spun.
“Lacey” told me about the changes she and her husband have been living the last few years. She made me think of something I often see: People are going through tremendous growth and change. It’s true of Lacey and of me and it’s true of many others - even when we’re not stepped back far enough to see it.
Lacey, husband and daughter live off-grid back in the woods out of town. They’re not in the wilderness but they’re out there. She described the beauty of where they live and the growth happening their solitary spot. Her face showed the happiness that she has with the life they've created compared to the life they led just a few years ago.
They’d been judged and criticized and punished by their families for their decision not to go along with social control mandates like you-know-what and that’s part of their story too. They weren’t feeling superior to or better than others because they were just following their own hearts. Yet their life had completely changed.
Things weren’t good because “off-grid” but because following hearts. Joy and awakening can happen and does happen in the midst of any circumstance. It’s not about the physcial setup or the appearance. The spirit is as available and as fully present where we are as it is in any other place. It’s as present in the moment of birth as it is in the moments of death.
Lacey lives private and secluded yet when she had an opportunity to speak, there she was with a wealth of experience and spiritual perspective on our time.
Many times she spoke admiringly and lovingly of her husband and her gratitude for his intelligence and smarts. They were doing this together: homeschooing, learning together, living off grid deep in the woods on a small acreage surrounded by God's own nature. I saw that although she was more prepared physically for hard time’s coming that I was, we were both in our good our rightful place.
It’s easy to imagine that there's an ideal situation and that Lacey’s might have been closer to it. It’s human to think we shouldn't be just where we are or doing what we’re doing. We imagine there's an ideal lifestyle for our time. But who are we to judge that? We’re part of a larger knowing than we know and we can only serve it.
It looks to me that there’s an awakening happening. It doesn't look like anything in particular and can’t be described. People stumble upon it internally in their own way in their own time and see that the larger process is good. They see, with gratitude, that it knows more than they know. Even though we’re headed for a crisis, we can only trust the process.
I condensed this post down from a much longer one because so much of what’s happening just can’t be talked about as if it was an object out there. It can only be experienced as it emerges in the moments, often in live conversation. I’ve quite failed to convey the lively quality of speaking with Lacey for example.

Interesting to see the evolution of the individual and the masterful process of living in the moment within the confines of the current reality as it unfolds.
